Working Remotely: Tips From an Expert
Being a digital nomad is not a vacation; it involves relocating and starting afresh. Many people fail to comprehend this fact. The journey entails seeking new acquaintances, a community, and a regular routine. Typically, my routine comprises working from a co-working space, cafe, or home. Although it may seem monotonous, most days revolve around work rather than leisure. The distinction lies in encountering a distinct array of adventures.
Take your time: This is one of my best pieces of advice. Whenever I find myself in a new place, I often experience a rush of excitement to explore every beautiful aspect it has to offer. However, embracing a slower pace and immersing myself in the location allows me to truly appreciate the planned activities and thoroughly enjoy my time there.
The significance of community is extensive for digital nomads, therefore it is crucial to seek out a community that aligns with your values. There are numerous reasons to engage with them, such as discussing business, having life chats, or exchanging digital nomad advice. Personally, I prioritize connecting with local church communities. (Note: It is not necessary to actively make a large number of friends within the community; one or two meaningful friendships are sufficient.)
Use your common sense: To put it simply, have the ability to distinguish and make wise decisions in everyday scenarios. For instance, if there is a suspicious Facebook post in an expat group advertising a new rental place, I would steer clear of it entirely. Personally, I tend to avoid any situations that have even the slightest potential for problems, especially when in an unfamiliar area.
Maintaining mental health is crucial and should be prioritized in your routine. It is essential to include periods of tranquility, regardless of what form they may take. Although being a digital nomad may appear thrilling to outsiders, the process of settling down in a new location and starting over can be quite overwhelming.
Meet The Locals is an opportunity to encounter the residents of a particular place, keeping the same implication.
One of the best ways to become familiar with your surroundings is by interacting with the individuals living there. It is advisable to exercise caution and primarily engage with locals in professional environments. While strangers can also offer valuable insights and the potential for new friendships, personally, I believe that meeting locals in professional settings ensures a higher level of support and responsibility. As an illustration, consider trying out walking tours within your vicinity.
The downside is that it can be challenging to bid farewell to the friends I form. The ebb and flow of people is simply a part of life. However, it is truly fortunate that I get to encounter other digital nomads each time I relocate. The reason behind their choices and their aspirations are always fascinating to me. Each person is wonderfully unique.
When it comes to internet security, it is clear that digital nomads rely on the internet (unless they possess undisclosed methods!). To ensure uninterrupted connectivity, I consistently ensure that my phone has data available to use as a hotspot, in case of internet outages. Additionally, it is essential to visit your chosen work location beforehand to examine the Wi-Fi connection before commencing your work days.
No matter where you work or what your schedule is, it is likely that you have a fixed number of hours per day, including some long days. It is important to pack accordingly for this. In my workbag, I always make sure to have certain essentials for obvious reasons. These essentials include an external battery, an external back-up, water, and extra cash. Additionally, some of my friends also pack a laptop stand.
